There are a number of gemological laboratories that issue certificates on diamonds. The three most reputable are AGS (American Gemoloical Society), GIA (Gemolocial Institute of America), and EGL (European Gemological Laboratory).

These labs give the diamond a pedigree without giving a dollar value. They issue the certificate only after a panel of gemologists concur on the specifications including carat weight, cut, color, and clarity.

It is important to learn about these four specifications — known as the Four C’s — because the price of the diamond can vary significantly for very slight changes in any of the categories.
